Pediatric Mono Testing in Oak Lawn, IL

OPEN EVERY DAY 9am – 7:30pm

At Minis Pediatric Walk-In Clinic, we offer testing for infectious mononucleosis for children. While this infection may not be as contagious as the common cold, it is still an important precaution to take for your little ones.

Also known as the “kissing disease,” most infants and younger children may not experience as many symptoms as older children and teenagers. Mono, caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, is most commonly spread through saliva but it can also be spread through sharing food or beverages. If your child has come into contact with anyone who has been diagnosed with mono or is showing symptoms, you can schedule an appointment with us to have your child seen immediately.

Mono Testing for Children — What to Expect

To check for mono, a pediatrician will conduct a quick exam to check for swollen tonsils and an enlarged liver or spleen, which are common indicators of the infection. A doctor may also take a blood sample.

If diagnosed with mono, a doctor will order for your child to drink plenty of fluids and rest as much as possible. There is no specific medicine that treats mono, but parents can provide their children with acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help ease aches and fever. Aspirin cannot be consumed when treating a child for mono as it can lead to liver failure and severe health conditions.

Signs and Symptoms of Mono in Kids

Signs and symptoms of mono may not show until 1 to 2 months after having been exposed and infected with the virus. Some of the most common symptoms include:
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen tonsils with white specks
  • Fatigue
Some other symptoms that may arise if your child has mono include:
  • Headaches
  • Aches
  • Abdominal pain with larger than normal liver
  • Rash
  • Loss of appetite
The most common symptoms are often mistaken for strep throat or the flu. If your child is showing any of these symptoms, you should have them see a doctor to get tested right away.
